What is EMDR Counselling?

A person looking stressed outside

When life delivers painful experiences, those memories don’t always settle on their own. For some children, teens, and adults, distressing memories can live in the body as if they’re happening right now, showing up in mood, sleep, or even physical symptoms.

At Oaks & Sands Counselling in Alliston, we understand how hard it is to carry these burdens. Many of our clients come to us after trying traditional talk therapy, looking for something different that helps them feel less stuck.

EMDR treatment (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a highly researched, peer-reviewed treatment modality. It’s unique because you don’t need to talk in detail about your traumatic events. For some, including military personnel or those who simply can’t bear to revisit their story, this can feel like relief from negative emotions in itself.

What is EMDR counselling?

EMDR is a structured therapy that uses bilateral stimulation, such as eye movements or tapping, to help the brain reprocess traumatic memories in a healthier way. Instead of being caught in the intensity of a disturbing event, EMDR helps shift how those memories are stored. Research, including publications in the Journal of EMDR Practice and Research, shows it is an effective treatment for trauma, anxiety disorders, posttraumatic stress disorder, and certain mental health conditions.

The World Health Organization and the American Psychiatric Association recognize EMDR as a safe and successful treatment, often helping people in fewer sessions compared to some other therapies.

Can EMDR therapy be harmful?

It’s natural to wonder about EMDR therapy side effects. Most people experience EMDR as safe when guided by a qualified EMDR therapist. Because traumatic stress and emotional memories are revisited, sessions can bring up strong feelings, vivid dreams, or temporary physical sensations. These responses are usually short-lived and part of the natural healing process. The danger comes when EMDR is attempted without a trained mental health professional. A skilled, trauma-informed therapist can pace the work, provide grounding, and help clients feel supported if emotions rise too quickly.

Who is EMDR for, and who might it not suit?

EMDR therapy is widely used for treating post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms, anxiety, dissociative disorders, eating disorders, and other mental health conditions. It is less appropriate for those with certain medical conditions, severe instability, or without access to consistent professional support. The therapy follows eight phases that move from history-taking through desensitization and reprocessing EMDR techniques, eventually strengthening positive belief systems.

Some clients cry during EMDR, others don’t—responses vary, and all are valid. Treatment outcomes depend on the nature of trauma, with complex trauma often requiring longer care. Still, studies consistently show EMDR to be successful at treating trauma. Including the psychological and physical symptoms stemming from adverse life experiences.
